Learn to Lead Rock Course

Our 4 day learn to lead and multi-pitch application course, is designed to advance an experienced climber into leading routes within their ability. The course allows participants to learn and practice essential skills and strategies to lead before transferring those skills into multi pitch terrain under the supervision of a guide.

Outline


Day 1:
We begin the day with a discussion on understanding the systems as well as risks of lead climbing. Guides will do a lead demo to give participants ideas for racking up, belaying positions, and stances to place protection. After that, participants will review anchors, and protection as needed and begin to practice skills while mock leading.

Day 2:
A discussion will start off the day, talking about frequency and availability for protection, fall consequence and likelihood, and protecting a follower. Participants will then have the opportunity to practice these skills and skills from the day before with mock leading and leading

Day 3:
Day 3 is focused on multi pitch systems. A Mini pitching demo, will introduce multi pitch hazards, 3 piece anchors, rope management, transitions, and descents. Then participants will get to practice these skills and review anything else from the past two days.

Day 4:
The last day is designed to bring everything together. Apply the skills learned on previous days on a longer multi pitch route.

Time and Place

This trip runs in a number of different climbing areas. Detailed instructions on where to meet are given during the registration process. In general, the days run from 8am to 4pm.
