Project Description

Introduction to Alpine Climbing Course

An Introduction to Alpine Mountaineering

In the Introduction to Alpine Climbing Course you will learn the fundamentals of climbing on rock, snow, and ice. The first day of the course is dedicated to rock climbing and includes an introduction to technical climbing movement, belaying, rappelling, and anchor building with artificial climbing protection. The remaining three days of the course are spent in the heart of the Sneffels Range to learn mountaineering skills such as ice axe use and self arrest, crampon use, anchor building, techniques for alpine snow and ice climbing, wilderness navigation and route planning, rope-team travel, and crevasse rescue. On the last day of the course participants will apply their new skills to a climb of 14,150′ Mt. Sneffels via a technical mountaineering route.

Just a quick line to thank you for a great four days of top-notch classes. Our guide Jim was very patient and knowledgeable, and I feel like my skills have reached a new level that will help me achieve more exciting goals in climbing. – Ernesto Sagas

Build a Strong Foundation of Skills for Future Climbs

This alpine mountaineering course will help beginners and intermediates learn the fundamentals of mountaineering and build a strong foundation of skills for future climbs. The course introduces skills in a clear and concise way, and then provides hands-on opportunities to apply the skills to real climbing situations.

Taught by an AMGA Certified Instructor/Guide

All of our instructors and guides are certified by the American Mountain Guides Association (AMGA). We are one of only a few guide services in the country with this level of credential. In addition to their qualifications, our guides have climbed alpine mountaineering routes around the world, including many first ascents, and they share this experience with you to aid you in developing your own mountain judgment. After being trained by our guides you will be on your way to a lifetime of safe and enjoyable alpine mountaineering.

You will get to use top-of-the-line ice axes, crampons, ropes, carabiners, harness, helmets, and an array of top quality alpine camping equipment.
