Many huts within the San Juans offer a European-style, catered hut skiing experience. Huts such as the OPUS will greet you with a freshly made hot bowl of après-ski soup after a long day of skiing. Delightful dinners and hearty breakfasts are prepared by the hut keeper and shared around a communal dining table. Big windows adorn the hut’s walls so you can look out to the vast playground of ski terrain that surrounds you. Catered huts include OPUS, Thelma, Red Mountain Lodge, and The Observatory.
Standard amenities including cooking and basic kitchen supplies will guarantee a comfortable experience. All huts will stay warm with different modes of heating from cozy wood burning stoves to modern radiant floor heating. Privacy wont be an issue with many huts containing private bedrooms. Some huts can include running and heated water along with private bathrooms. Want more still? All huts in the San Juans offer wide range of skiable terrain. There is something for everyone with many runs that surpass 2500 vertical feet from top to bottom. From tree skiing to aggressive big mountain lines in the alpine, it is a paradise for intermediate to advanced level skiers. Beginners will have fun too with no shortage of easy slopes that contain low angle terrain and less vertical uphill touring.
Use your hut as a basecamp for big-line powder seekers throughout the winter. From March – April use a hut as shelter during your ski mountaineering missions or even for those just wanting to harvest that corn! It’s also possible to do a quick one-night visit with some skiing around the hut. For hut-to-hut traverses, check out our American Haute Route page for additional information!

Each hut can be accessed individually for basecamp style trips or multiple huts can be linked together for hut-to-hut style trips.
The American Haute Route is a new concept with the goal of creating routes connecting the various backcountry huts within the San Juan Mountains through a multi-day traverse.
